Why combine PMST with Shockwave Therapy ESWT?

What is  Pulsed Magnetic Super Transduction Therapy (PMST) PMST ® ?

PMST ® is a novel technology that uses high energy magnetic fields as a non- invasive treatment solution that opens new possibilities in tissue regeneration and rehabilitation. PMST® can be used for diseases of the musculoskeletal system. PMST® perfectly complements extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT).

If you’re an existing shockwave therapy user or not, PMST ® is fast becoming an essential part of a clinical toolbox, opening up possibilities in MSK treatments and acute pain that’s not been available before.

PMST® is not a replacement for Shockwave, far from it, these two devices treat very different conditions. It is an excellent tool to add to your current shockwave service or as a stand-alone treatment. Early adopters of the novel technology have described it as a ‘Game Changer’ for chronic pain and arthritis – their patients are loving it.

Therapeutic magnetic fields are nothing new.

We are surrounded by magnetic fields, in fact the Earth is one big magnetic field, our homes are filled with appliances that use magnetic fields, such as speakers and TV’s. MRI scans that use magnetic fields are also considered one of the safest medical procedures available.  PMST® uses magnetic fields that have no thermal effect and are pain free, the strength of the magnetic field used is approximately less than 10% of a normal MRI dosage.

Magnetic fields used for therapeutic healing in the past has been limited to pulsed electromagnetic field therapy or PEMF for short. PEMF has been around for 40 – 50 years, but differs vastly from EMTT ’s novel technology. PEMF is used for healing non-healing fractures, the devices are cumbersome, the treatment sessions are very long and a lot of sessions are required.

PMST®  in comparison has a much higher energy output – approx. 40% stronger than PEMF, it also has a much higher oscillation and a greater treatment depth of up to 18cm. The circular shape of the PMST® handpiece allows the device to produce a magnetic field with greater amplitude and therefore a greater treatment depth and width, ideal for widespread pain therapy.

What are the biological effects of PMST ® ?

How does it interact with human tissue.

Energy is transferred via the applicator to the body areas needing to be treated. With PMST level of pulse intensity it is possible to achieve a therapeutic effect in the cell by increasing cell wall permeability, which is hindered by both the ageing process and diseases. A stable cell membrane ensures permeability for vital substances such as sodium-potassium, chemical reactions of the cells can be positively influenced by PMST® and normal cell processes can be achieved.

The magnetic energy basically acts as the key to the cell wall gates, opening them up to help the body to repair itself by accelerating cellular activity. The individual pulses penetrate the tissue so that even deeper tissue layers can be reached. There is no temperature increase in the tissue, thanks to the short duration of the individual pulses and the integrated cooling system.

PMST® produces a strong anti-inflammatory effect, significant reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines (Varani et al 2008; Ongaro et all 2011).

How does PMST® differ to Shockwave ESWT?

In contrast PMST®  has an anti-inflammatory response, reducing pain and inflammation in acute pain presentation, irritable flare ups, neuropathic pain, diffused pain, degenerative pathologies such as Osteo Arthritis. In these cases, shockwave therapy would not be tolerated well, whereas PMST® is tolerated, even with the most painful conditions. PMST® is ideal for rheumatic patients, clinicians tend to avoid using shockwave in this instance. PMST® can also be used post-surgery for pain relief and accelerated healing, even where joint replacements are involved.

How does PMST® compliment Shockwave ESWT ?

There are many crossovers with PMST® and Shockwave, but PMST ® opens new treatments possibilities that are contraindicated or too painful to treat with shockwave. PMST® should be considered as an additional tool to add to your treatment portfolio.

What clinicians are saying

“We’ve been routinely successful in treating classic indications with the mechanotransduction induced by radial and focused ESWT in recent years. So the PMST® (extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapy), with its active magnetotransduction principle, its highly energetic magnetic field (80 mT), as well as its very high oscillation frequency and penetration depth, is the ideal complement to our therapy portfolio. I currently use PMST® with the PhysioMagneto® on the lumbar spine for pain therapy (in combination with acupuncture), for enthesopathies of the elbow joint, calcific tendinitis of the shoulder and plantar fasciitis. The PMST® is performed every two days for a total of six treatments. This treatment regimen has been the best at allowing us to reduce patient pain and decrease patient medications. The patients appreciate the relatively short treatment duration with PMST®. My previous experiences with the PhysioMagneto® have been consistently positive”.  Dr Damian Garner MD, San Francisco

“At my clinic and practice, I use the PhysioMagneto® primarily for degenerative joint, muscle and tendon disorders, but also for inflammatory forms of musculoskeletal disorders, both as a standalone therapy and as a supplement to extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). Treatment with the

PhysioMagneto® is incredibly straightforward. Depending on the clinical picture, I can tailor the pulse intensity and pulse repetition rate to my patients. For a localised treatment, I secure the applicator above the patient using an articulated arm. If I’m working over a larger area, I guide the applicator manually” Dr.Eli Fielding DC

How does PMST® help reduce COVID infection risk?

TOUCH FREE – The PMST ® device is fitted with an articulated arm, it’s a fantastic piece of engineering that is neither jerky or stiff to move. Patients can be positioned, fully clothed and the articulated arm positioned smoothly over the treatment area. The patient can then be safely left alone for the duration of the quick treatment. Meaning that the treatment is largely touch free, reducing infection risk.

TREAT HIGH RISK PATIENTS – PMST®  is also ideal for patients who require corticosteroid injection who are at high risk from COVID complications, usually patients are required to self-isolate post injection due to the steroid affecting immune system suppression. PMST®  can successfully treat these patients’ pain and accelerate healing without putting them at unnecessary risk, opening new treatment possibilities for many.

QUICK & SIMPLE – PMST®  treatments are short at just 10-20 mins with the ability to remain clothed and patients can be safely left alone during the session.
